Question #3: Why study?

There are probably lots of reasons you're in school right now, and plenty of reasons you're taking the subjects you've chosen. Perhaps you feel that you have little if any choice about this issue, and you may be unhappy about that.

Isn't it interesting that so many people are going back to school, even well into "retirement" years? There must be more to learning than getting geared up for a good job, or pleasing our parents, or fulfilling a legal requirement.

From a spiritual perspective, it helps to think of our life on earth as a continuing classroom of the best kind. This classroom is only partially about assignments and tests. It is also a lot about independent study, and group projects, and the sheer joy of discovery, which includes plenty of laughter!

Instead of trying to get out of school as quickly as possible, or beating the system, or sliding by, how about approaching every aspect of your life as if you're in God's class. And since He's a spectacular teacher, always creative, interesting, kind, fair and full of fun, life becomes a tremendous learning curve. And you are destined to succeed unconditionally as one of God's star pupils. (Hint: God thinks of each of us as a favorite pupil.)

Real learning is only incidentally about books and papers. It is much, much more about developing the spiritual character and qualities of thought that are naturally yours as God's image and likeness. We all need to exercise more of our birthright personality, but we never need to "acquire" more character, just "be" more of what we already are.

That's why this Website is really for everybody, since we're all students. This is a really big class we're in, and we're all destined to graduate with honors!

The Amplified Bible:
"Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing... (and skillfully teaching) the Word of Truth."
2nd Timothy 2:15
"Make it your ambition... to live quietly and peacefully, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands... so that you may bear yourselves becomingly... and command the respect of the outside world, being dependent on nobody (self-supporting) and having need of nothing."
1st Thessalonians 4, 11,12
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy
"In Latin, the word rendered disciple signifies student; and the word indicates the power of healing was not a supernatural gift to those learners, but the result of their cultivated spiritual understanding of the divine Science, which their Master demonstrated by healing the sick and sinning. Hence the universal application of his saying: ‘Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me [understand me] through their word’."
